P0002: Fuel volume regulator circuit out of range or not performing
Fuel volume regulator control circuit range/performance
Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected
Our sources link P0002 to stalling, hard starting and poor fuel economy but do not rate how safe it is to drive.
It gets more serious if:
- Inspect soon: Inspect soon if the engine stalls, is hard to start or loses power.
P0002 in short
P0002 means the fuel volume regulator, which controls how much fuel the pump delivers to the engine, is out of range or not responding as commanded. Causes include the regulator, its wiring, a clogged filter or a weak pump. Expect hard starting or stalling. Have it checked soon, as severity is not verified.
Some fuel systems use a regulator that the computer controls to adjust how much fuel reaches the rail and how much returns to the tank. P0002 sets when the commanded and actual behavior do not match.
PartsAvatar lists a failed regulator solenoid, wiring or connector faults, a defective valve, a plug that has come loose, a computer that needs reprogramming and fuel pump or pressure problems. Clue adds a clogged fuel filter and a fuel pressure sensor.
Because several parts can set it, measure fuel pressure before replacing the regulator.
Most likely causes
These are general causes for this code across vehicles. None is specific to one make or model.
Cause 1: Fuel volume regulator or its solenoid
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- PartsAvatar and Clue both put the regulator and its solenoid first.
- What would change this
- Rises if the regulator does not respond when commanded or its resistance is out of specification. Falls if it responds normally.
Cause 2: Wiring, plug or connector fault at the regulator
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- Both sources list damaged wiring, corrosion or a disconnected plug.
- What would change this
- Rises if the plug is loose or corroded or the code appears intermittently. Falls if circuit tests are good.
Cause 3: Weak fuel pump or clogged fuel filter
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- Both sources list pump and filter problems as ways the fuel system fails to deliver, but they usually point to pressure issues first.
- What would change this
- Rises if measured fuel pressure is low. Falls if pressure is normal.
Cause 4: Engine computer needing reprogramming
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- PartsAvatar lists a PCM that needs reprogramming, ranking it behind hardware.
- What would change this
- Rises only after regulator, wiring and pressure tests are good.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Have a technician read fuel pressure and compare it with the commanded value, and read all codes.
Warning:Fuel is under pressure and flammable. Only trained technicians should open the fuel system.
IfFuel pressure is low or does not follow the command
It meansCheck the fuel supply and the regulator.
IfFuel pressure is normal
It meansCheck the regulator circuit.
Step 2: Inspect the regulator plug and wiring, and test the regulator's resistance and drive signal against the service manual.
Warning:Work only with the ignition off and the fuel pressure relieved.
IfPlug loose, corroded or wiring damaged
It meansRepair the connection.
IfRegulator out of specification or unresponsive
It meansReplace the regulator.
IfCircuit and regulator good but pressure low
It meansCheck the pump and filter.
Symptoms
- Hard starting or stalling
- Poor throttle response or reduced power
- Worse fuel economy
- Check engine light

P0002 questions
Is P0002 the same as a fuel pressure regulator fault?
Not exactly. P0002 is about the computer-controlled regulator circuit's performance. Measure pressure before replacing parts.
