C1203: Skid control ECU to engine computer communication malfunction (Toyota)
ABS/VSC to ECM communication fault
Severity: Inspect soon
Toyota's owner's manual says a slip indicator or ABS light that stays on means a fault in VSC, TRAC or ABS, and the car should be inspected immediately. With this code, traction and stability control cannot work with the engine as designed.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: The red brake system warning light comes on or the brake pedal feels wrong. Toyota says to stop in a safe place and contact a dealer, because continuing to drive may be dangerous.
C1203 in short
On Toyotas, C1203 means the ABS/VSC control unit and the engine computer stopped exchanging the data that traction and stability control need. VSC, TRAC and often ABS lights come on. It is common on 2002–2004 Sequoias, where Toyota issued bulletins. Have it inspected promptly; ordinary braking normally still works.
Stability control (VSC) and traction control (TRAC) need to reduce engine power when a wheel slips, so the skid control ECU and the engine computer (ECM) constantly swap data. On the 2005 Sequoia that data goes through a translate ECU over a link Toyota calls CAN1. The repair manual says code 53 (C1203) sets when the data cannot be received for 5 seconds or more with normal system voltage.
Toyota's repair procedure checks the wiring and connectors between the skid control ECU and the translate ECU, then replaces the translate ECU if the wiring is good. The ECM and skid control ECU are also listed as trouble areas.
Toyota issued bulletins for this code on the 2003 Sequoia (BR00203) and 2003 4Runner (00503). The 4Runner bulletin says changed skid control computer software prevents the condition. Many 2002–2004 Sequoia owners report C1203 stored with C1223 and C1247.
Pick your make
C1203 is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.
Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Skid control ECU logic needing Toyota's update (2003 4Runner, Sequoia)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Toyota bulletins for the 2003 Sequoia and 2003 4Runner cover C1203, and the 4Runner bulletin says a change to the skid control computer logic prevents it. We have only read the bulletin summaries.
- What would change this
- Rises on a 2003 Sequoia or 4Runner that has not had the bulletin repair. Falls on other models or once the update is done.
Cause 2: Wiring or connector fault between the skid control ECU and translate ECU
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- Toyota's repair manual checks this harness and its connectors first.
- What would change this
- Rises if the code comes and goes with bumps or after body or engine bay work. Falls if the harness tests good.
Cause 3: Faulty translate ECU
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- Toyota's repair manual says to replace the translate ECU if the wiring is good. A 2003 Sequoia owner reports a dealer quoting translate ECU and skid control ECU replacement.
- What would change this
- Rises only after the wiring and connectors test good.
Cause 4: Engine computer (ECM) or its communication
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- Toyota lists the ECM as a trouble area for this code, and a Tundra dealer readout calls it the ECM communication circuit.
- What would change this
- Rises if engine codes or other network codes are stored too.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Have all ABS/VSC and engine codes read with a scan tool that can talk to the ABS module, and write down every code.
IfEngine or network communication codes are stored too
It meansThe fault may be on the engine computer side or in the network wiring.
Go to step 2 Points to: Engine computer (ECM) or its communication
IfOnly ABS/VSC codes are stored
It meansLook at the bulletin status and the skid control ECU link.
Step 2: Ask a Toyota dealer whether a bulletin for C1203 applies to your VIN and whether it has been done. Toyota issued bulletins for the 2003 Sequoia and 4Runner.
IfA bulletin applies and has not been done
It meansThe bulletin repair is the first step.
Points to: Skid control ECU logic needing Toyota's update (2003 4Runner, Sequoia)
IfNo bulletin applies, or it was already done
It meansThe wiring and modules need diagnosis.
Step 3: Have a technician check the communication wiring and connectors between the skid control ECU, translate ECU (where fitted) and ECM using Toyota service information, then clear the codes and recheck.
Warning:This involves the brake and stability control modules. Leave it to a qualified technician, and do not drive if the red brake light is on or the pedal feels wrong.
IfA wiring or connector fault is found
It meansRepairing the wiring is the fix.
Points to: Wiring or connector fault between the skid control ECU and translate ECU
IfWiring is good and the code returns
It meansThe translate ECU is next on Toyota's list.
Symptoms
- VSC or VSC TRAC light on
- ABS light on, sometimes with the check engine light
- Grinding or fluttering felt through the brake pedal at low speed (reported on Sequoias)
- Red brake warning light on Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.

C1203 questions
Does C1203 mean my brakes will fail?
Normally no; ordinary braking still works. It means the ABS/VSC unit cannot talk properly to the engine computer, so traction and stability control may not work. Have it checked promptly.
Is there a Toyota bulletin for C1203?
Yes for the 2003 Sequoia (BR00203) and 2003 4Runner (00503). Ask a dealer whether it applies to your VIN.
