C0460: Steering angle sensor signal invalid or not calibrated

Steering position sensor / steering wheel angle sensor

C0460 in short

C0460 means the computer received an invalid or uncalibrated steering angle signal, so stability control is switched off. On GM cars it often sets after the battery is disconnected and clears after the wheel is turned lock to lock. If it returns, the sensor, its wiring or a module needs a shop check.

The steering angle sensor tells the stability control system where the wheel points. If the signal is badly formed or the sensor has lost its learned centre position, the computer stores C0460.

Saab service information (GM-based) says the brake control module disables stability control and hill start assist for that ignition cycle and lights the indicator. A GM service note on the Buick Envision says the code can set after the battery is disconnected because the learned value is lost; the power steering control module re-zeroes the sensor after the wheel is turned lock to lock with the engine running, or after a straight drive.

Some GM trucks pair this code with a loss of power steering assist, which is a separate, more urgent fault on that vehicle.

Most likely causes

These are general causes for this code across vehicles. None is specific to one make or model.

  1. Cause 1: Steering angle sensor lost its centre position

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
GM guidance for the Buick Envision names battery disconnection as a cause and gives a lock-to-lock or straight-drive relearn as the fix.
    What would change this
Rises if the code appeared right after battery or steering work. Falls if it returns after the relearn.
How to test the power steering control module
  2. Cause 2: Steering angle sensor, its wiring or its power and ground

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Saab's tests are the sensor reading across -550 to +550 degrees, a 12 V reference and a ground under 5 ohms, with the sensor replaced if those fail.
    What would change this
Rises if the angle reading is missing or jumps as the wheel turns. Falls if readings track the wheel smoothly.
  3. Cause 3: Brake or power steering control module

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
Saab lists the brake module as the last item if the sensor circuits test normal.
    What would change this
Rises if the sensor and circuits pass and the code returns. Falls if a relearn or sensor fix clears it.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: After any battery or steering work, have the steering angle relearned: turn the wheel lock to lock with the engine running, or drive straight for a short way, then clear the code.

    Use caution

Warning:Only do this in a safe, open area. If the Service Power Steering message shows or the steering is heavy, do not drive; have it towed.

  2. Step 2: With a scan tool, watch the steering angle reading as the wheel is turned and check the sensor's reference voltage and ground.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool, multimeter

Warning:The sensor sits in the airbag clock spring and steering column. Work there needs the airbag system disabled by a shop.

Symptoms

  • Stability control or traction control light on
  • Service Power Steering message or heavy steering, on some GM models Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.

C0460 questions

Why did C0460 appear after a battery change?

A GM service note says disconnecting the battery can wipe the learned steering centre. A lock-to-lock turn or straight drive lets the module re-learn it.
