B1881: Passenger seat belt pretensioner circuit open or high resistance (Ford and Mazda)

Passenger pretensioner circuit fault

B1881 in short

On Ford and Mazda, B1881 means the airbag computer found an open circuit or high resistance in the passenger seat belt pretensioner wiring. Ford and Mazda bulletins address it on early-2000s Ranger, Escape, B-Series and Tribute. The pretensioner may not work in a crash, so book a dealer visit soon.

A pretensioner tightens the seat belt in a crash. It fires from a small circuit watched by the restraint control module. If resistance rises or the circuit opens, the module stores B1881 and lights the airbag lamp.

Ford bulletin 0327 for the Ranger calls B1877 the driver and B1881 the passenger pretensioner circuit with high resistance, and the Escape bulletin 032011 calls them circuit open. Mazda has matching bulletins for the B-Series and Tribute.

Owner complaints describe dealers replacing the pretensioner connectors per a Ford bulletin, and a Tribute estimate quoting updated soldered connectors. That points to the connector more than the pretensioner itself.

Pick your make

B1881 is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.

Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Failing pretensioner connector or terminals

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford and Mazda bulletins on B1877 and B1881 address the pretensioner circuit, and dealers in owner complaints replaced the connectors and cleared the code.
    What would change this
Rises on a 2001-2004 Escape, Ranger, B-Series or Tribute. Falls if connectors test good.
  2. Cause 2: Pretensioner itself

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
A 2001 Escape owner was told both pretensioners and kits were replaced, but the complaint does not say which part cured it.
    What would change this
Rises only after the connector and wiring pass.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Have the airbag or body codes read with a scan tool and note the exact code and any others.

Low riskTool: scan tool with module access

  2. Step 2: Give your VIN to a dealer and ask for any bulletin or recall on the system.

    • IfNothing applies

It meansThe service manual diagnosis is next.

  3. Step 3: Have a trained technician follow the maker pinpoint test for the pretensioner circuit, starting with the connectors.

Warning:Never probe airbag connectors or wiring with a test light or meter, and never unplug them yourself. Airbags and pretensioners can still fire with the ignition off. Leave this to a dealer or trained technician.

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light stays on or flashes

How to fix

This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.
