B1801: Driver airbag (D squib) circuit open (Toyota)

Driver airbag circuit open, often the spiral cable

B1801 in short

On Toyota, B1801 means the airbag computer sees an open circuit in the driver's front airbag firing circuit (the "D squib"). The airbag light comes on and the driver's airbag may not deploy. Toyota dealers have often traced it to the spiral cable behind the steering wheel. Have it repaired soon; never probe airbag wiring yourself.

Each airbag has a firing circuit, called a squib circuit, that the airbag computer checks every time the car starts. Toyota labels the driver's front airbag circuit "D squib". B1801 means that circuit is open: the computer cannot see the airbag on the other end, so it turns the airbag light on.

The driver's airbag sits in the steering wheel, so its wiring passes through the spiral cable (clockspring), a coiled ribbon that lets the wheel turn. Owners of 2007–2008 RAV4s, Camry Hybrids and other Toyotas report dealers reading "open in D squib" and replacing the spiral cable.

We found no Toyota bulletin for B1801, so this page relies on dealer readouts quoted in NHTSA complaints. The airbag system is safety-critical; diagnosis belongs with a dealer or trained technician.

Pick your make

B1801 is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.

Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Spiral cable (clockspring) open inside the steering column

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Several Toyota dealer readouts quoted in NHTSA complaints pair B1801 "open in D squib" with a spiral cable replacement, on RAV4, Camry Hybrid and other models.
    What would change this
Rises if the technician traces the open to the steering column. Falls if the open is at the airbag module or its connector.
  2. Cause 2: Driver airbag connector or terminal fault

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
GM service information lists loose connections, corrosion and unseated connectors as general causes of open airbag circuits; not a Toyota finding for B1801.
    What would change this
Rises if the spiral cable tests good. Falls if the open is inside the spiral cable.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Have the airbag codes read with a scan tool that can talk to the airbag module, and note every code stored.

Low riskTool: scan tool with airbag (SRS) access

    • IfB1801 is stored

It meansThe driver airbag circuit is open somewhere between the computer and the airbag.

      Go to step 2

    • IfOther airbag codes are stored as well

It meansA technician should work through them in the order the service manual gives.

      Go to step 2

  2. Step 2: Have a dealer or trained technician run the airbag system diagnosis from the service manual.

Warning:Never probe airbag connectors or wiring with a test light or meter, and never unplug them yourself. Nissan warns that airbags and pretensioners can still deploy after the ignition is off, and that test equipment must not be used on airbag circuits unless the service manual calls for it. Leave this to a dealer or trained technician.

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light stays on after the engine starts

How to fix

This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.

Parts and cost context

  • Spiral cable (clockspring):Dealers commonly replace it for B1801. It is part of the airbag circuit, so this is dealer or trained-technician work. Labour varies; get a quote.

B1801 questions

Will my driver's airbag deploy with B1801 set?

Assume it may not. B1801 means the computer sees an open in the driver airbag circuit, and owner's manuals warn the airbags may not work properly while the light is on.
