B1448: Front passenger seat occupant sensor mat fault (Kia)
Passenger occupant classification (OCS) sensor mat fault
Severity: Inspect soon
The airbag light means the system has found a fault, and Honda and Toyota owner's manuals say to have it checked promptly because the airbags may not work as designed; Kia ties this code to the sensor that decides whether the passenger airbag should deploy.
B1448 in short
On Kia models, B1448 is one of the codes the airbag computer stores when the front passenger seat's occupant sensor mat stops working properly. The airbag light comes on and the passenger airbag may not be managed correctly. Have a dealer check it soon, and never probe airbag wiring yourself. Hyundai's meaning is not verified.
The front passenger seat has a sensor mat in its cushion that tells the airbag computer whether the seat is empty or holds a child seat, a small person or an adult. Kia says the mat is there to detect child seats and small occupants who could be hurt if the passenger airbag deployed.
When the mat is not working properly, Kia says the airbag warning light comes on and B1447, B1448, B1449 and/or B1450 may be stored. Kia's bulletins cover the 2007–2009 Spectra, 2006–2010 Optima and 2008–2011 Rio, and Kia extended the warranty on the mat for the Optima and Rio.
B1448 also shows up often on Hyundai vehicles, but we could not find a Hyundai document that states its meaning, so this page speaks only for Kia. On any make, the airbag system is safety-critical and its diagnosis belongs with a dealer or trained technician.
Pick your make
B1448 is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.
Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Front passenger seat occupant sensor mat not working
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Kia's bulletins and warranty extensions name the passenger seat sensor mat as the part behind B1447–B1450 on the Spectra, Optima and Rio, and their repair is replacing the mat.
- What would change this
- Rises if a dealer's scan shows B1448, with or without B1447, B1449 or B1450, on a Kia covered by these bulletins. Falls if other airbag codes point to a different part.
Cause 2: Objects, liquid or pressure on the passenger seat upsetting the sensor
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- Honda's manual warns that spilled liquid or objects under the seat can stop the passenger sensors working properly, and Toyota warns that kicking the passenger seat can make the system report a fault. These are general warnings, not Kia findings for B1448.
- What would change this
- Rises if the light goes out and stays out once the seat is cleared and dried. Falls if the code returns with the seat empty and dry.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Have the airbag codes read with a scan tool that can talk to the airbag module, and note every code stored.
IfB1448 is stored alone or with B1447, B1449 or B1450 on a Kia
It meansKia links these codes to the passenger seat sensor mat.
IfOther airbag codes are stored as well
It meansA technician should work through them in the order the service manual gives.
Step 2: Give your VIN to a Kia dealer and ask whether a sensor mat bulletin or warranty extension covers the car.
IfThe car is covered
It meansThe dealer diagnoses and replaces the mat under the bulletin.
Points to: Front passenger seat occupant sensor mat not working
IfThe car is not covered
It meansRule out anything on or under the seat first.
Step 3: Remove anything stored on or under the front passenger seat and dry any spilled liquid, then see whether the airbag light still comes on after the next restart.
IfThe light goes out and stays out
It meansSomething on or under the seat was likely upsetting the sensor.
Points to: Objects, liquid or pressure on the passenger seat upsetting the sensor
IfThe light stays on
It meansThe system needs a proper diagnosis.
Step 4: Have a dealer or trained technician run the airbag system diagnosis from the service manual.
Warning:Never probe airbag connectors or wiring with a test light or meter, and never unplug them yourself. Nissan warns that airbags and pretensioners can still deploy after the ignition is off, and that test equipment must not be used on airbag circuits unless the service manual calls for it. Leave this to a dealer or trained technician.
IfThe technician confirms the sensor mat is faulty
It meansKia's bulletins replace the mat.

Symptoms
- Airbag warning light stays on after the engine starts
- Passenger airbag status light shows the airbag off with an adult in the seat

B1448 questions
Will the passenger airbag work while B1448 is set?
Don't count on it. The light means the system has found a fault, and Honda and Toyota manuals warn the airbags may not work properly until it is checked. Seat children in the back.
Is B1448 covered by a warranty extension?
On some Kias, yes. Kia extended the passenger seat sensor mat warranty for 2006–2010 Optima and 2008–2011 Rio models. A dealer can check your VIN.
