B1342: Control module internal fault (Ford, Lincoln)

ECU is defective (module internal fault)

B1342 in short

On Ford and Lincoln vehicles, B1342 means a control module has found a fault inside itself. The airbag module, the anti-lock brake module or another module can store it, so which warning light is on matters. Airbag and brake faults need a prompt check, and never probe airbag wiring yourself.

B1342 is a general Ford code. Rather than naming a sensor, it says the module that stored it failed its own self-check. Ford bulletins list it in the restraints control module on the 2001–2005 Windstar, Freestar and Crown Victoria, and in the occupant classification module on the 2007–2008 Ranger.

On other models the same code comes from a different module. Ford and Lincoln bulletins for 2000–2002 vehicles describe B1342 as an anti-lock brake module failure with the ABS lamp lit, and a 2003 Navigator bulletin links it to the power liftgate and running boards.

So the first step is to find out which module stored it. If the airbag light is on, the airbags may not work as designed, and that system is for trained technicians only. Mazda also lists B1342 with an airbag light on the 2007–2008 CX-7 and CX-9, without saying what it means.

Pick your make

B1342 is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.

Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Restraints (airbag) control module internal fault

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford's bulletin names B1342 a restraints control module fault on the 2001–2005 Windstar, Freestar and Crown Victoria, and an older Explorer and Expedition bulletin links it to an intermittent airbag lamp.
    What would change this
Rises if the code is stored in the restraints module with the airbag light on. Falls if another module stored it.
  2. Cause 2: Anti-lock brake control module internal fault

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford and Lincoln bulletins for the 2001 Explorer Sport Trac and 2001 Lincoln LS describe B1342 as an anti-lock brake control module failure with the ABS lamp on.
    What would change this
Rises if the code is stored in the ABS module with the ABS lamp on. Falls if the ABS module passes its self-test.
How to test the brake system control module (abs module)
  3. Cause 3: Occupant classification module fault (2007–2008 Ranger)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford's bulletin for the 2007–2008 Ranger covers B1342 stored in the occupant classification sensor module.
    What would change this
Rises on a 2007–2008 Ranger with the code in the occupant classification module. Falls on other models.
  4. Cause 4: A false code that should be cleared, not a failed module (some models)

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
Ford's Econoline bulletin says that when B1342 appears together with C1222, C1115 and C1226, the module should not be replaced and the codes should be cleared. This applies only to that older van.
    What would change this
Rises on an Econoline with that exact set of codes. Falls if B1342 returns at once after clearing.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Have every module scanned, not only the engine computer, and note which module stored B1342 and which warning lights are on.

Low riskTool: scan tool that reads all modules

  2. Step 2: Ask a Ford, Lincoln or Mazda dealer for bulletins that match your model and the module that stored the code.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Have a trained technician confirm the module fault using the service manual before any module is replaced.

Best left to a shopTool: maker's diagnostic tool

Warning:Never probe airbag connectors or wiring with a test light or meter, and never unplug them yourself. Nissan warns that airbags and pretensioners can still deploy after the ignition is off, and that test equipment must not be used on airbag circuits unless the service manual calls for it. Leave this to a dealer or trained technician. Brake modules are safety-critical too.

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light on or coming on intermittently
  • ABS or traction control warning lamp on
  • Power liftgate or running boards stop working (2003 Navigator)

How to fix

This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.

Parts and cost context

  • Control module (restraints or ABS):B1342 often leads to replacing the module that stored it, but Ford's Econoline bulletin shows it is not always needed. Replacement airbag modules must be the correct part and installed by a technician. Labour varies; get a quote.

B1342 questions

Does B1342 always mean the airbag module is bad?

No. On Ford and Lincoln it means whichever module stored it found an internal fault; bulletins show it in airbag, ABS, occupant sensing and body modules. A full-module scan shows which one.
