B0052: Airbag computer logged a deployment command (Chevrolet and GMC)

Deployment commanded, airbag light on

B0052 in short

On Chevrolet and GMC, B0052 means the airbag computer logged a deployment command to an airbag or belt pretensioner, usually after a real crash. Owners also report it with no crash. Treat the restraint system as unreliable until a dealer or trained technician inspects it; do not clear or work on it yourself.

The airbag computer, which GM calls the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM), watches for impacts and sends firing signals to the airbags and belt pretensioners. B0052 is its record that a firing command was issued.

GM-engineered service information lists two versions: B0052 00, deployment commanded, which a scan tool can clear, and B0052 56, too many transitions, which latches and calls for SDM replacement. In the complaints we read, the code appeared after crashes, including one where the owner says the airbags did not fire, and once on a truck that had no collision while belts locked retracted.

Because it can mean the system has already been used, an airbag light with this code should be treated as the restraints not being ready. Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep use B0052-13 for a passenger seat belt sensor circuit in an FCA bulletin, so this page only covers Chevrolet and GMC.

Pick your make

B0052 is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.

Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.

Most likely causes

These are general causes for this code across vehicles. None is specific to one make or model.

  1. Cause 1: A real impact or event that triggered a deployment command

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Service information says the module sets this code after each deployment command, and the complaints we read are mostly crashes: a deer strike, a rear-end collision and a T-bone crash.
    What would change this
Rises if there was a collision or hard impact, or deployed parts or locked belts. Falls if there was no impact at all.
  2. Cause 2: An unintended or erroneous command from the airbag computer

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
One Silverado owner reports belts locked retracted with B0052-04 and no collision, and a shop concluded the control unit had indicated a collision. A single owner report, so it ranks below a real impact.
    What would change this
Rises if crash data shows no impact event. Falls if the vehicle was involved in any collision.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Think back: was the vehicle hit, did it hit something, or did the seat belts lock tight on their own? Note it for the shop.

    Low risk

    • IfThere was an impact, even a minor one

It meansThe code most likely records a real deployment command.

      Go to step 2

    • IfThere was no impact at all

It meansTell the dealer clearly; this is the less common case and needs the module data checked.

      Go to step 2

  2. Step 2: Have a dealer or trained technician read the airbag computer, retrieve its crash data and inspect every airbag, pretensioner and the computer itself before the vehicle is relied on.

Warning:Never probe, unplug or test airbag, pretensioner or seat belt buckle connectors yourself. Airbags and pretensioners can deploy and injure you even with the ignition off, and an incorrect repair can leave the restraint dead in a crash. Leave this to a dealer or trained technician. Do not clear the code and drive on; B0052 56 cannot be cleared with a scan tool and needs the module replaced.

Symptoms

  • Airbag (SRS) warning light on after an impact
  • Seat belts locked tight in the retracted position
  • Airbags did not deploy in a crash even though the code was stored Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.

Chevrolet

  • 2012–2016 · Silverado 1500

    Supported by vehicle data

Silverado owners report B0052 after a deer strike, a rear impact, and once with belts locked and no collision. No GM bulletin naming B0052 was found in the local cache.

GMC

  • 2010 · Yukon XL

    Supported by vehicle data

A 2010 Yukon XL T-bone crash readout shows B0052:00 with B0015:04 and B0022:04 (belt buckle tensioner loops open) and no airbag deployment, per the owner.

B0052 questions

Does B0052 mean my airbags deployed?

It means the airbag computer commanded deployment. Owners report it after crashes, including some who say no airbag fired, so the code alone does not prove what happened. A technician needs to read the crash data and inspect the system.
