B0028: Right side airbag firing circuit open or high resistance (Honda, Chrysler, Ram)

Right side airbag circuit open / squib circuit

B0028 in short

On Honda, Chrysler and Ram, B0028 means the airbag computer found an open circuit or high resistance in the right side airbag circuit. The airbag light comes on and that airbag may not deploy. Repairs found in complaints are at connectors or the seat harness. Have it checked soon; never probe airbag wiring yourself.

The airbag computer tests the resistance of every firing circuit at startup. B0028 is stored when the right side airbag circuit reads open or too high, so the airbag light comes on and that airbag may not deploy.

Honda searched for 2018 to 2020 Accords and CR-Vs with B0020-13 or B0028-13 and an SRS light. Owners of 2016 Chrysler 200s and Ram 1500s report dealers finding the open circuit in the connector or harness under or inside the passenger seat.

Other makers also set B0028, including Nissan and Jeep, but we did not find enough sources for their meaning, so this page speaks for Honda, Chrysler and Ram.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Connector or harness under or inside the passenger seat

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Chrysler and Ram complaints quote dealers and mechanics finding the open circuit at the seat connectors or seat back harness, and replacing the harness fixed it.
    What would change this
Rises if a wiggle test of the seat harness makes the code come and go. Falls if the harness checks good.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Have the airbag codes read with a scan tool that can talk to the airbag module, and note every code stored.

Low riskTool: scan tool with airbag (SRS) access

    • IfB0028 is stored, with or without B0020

It meansThe right side airbag circuit reads open or high.

      Go to step 2

    • IfOther airbag codes are stored as well

It meansA technician should work through them in the order the service manual gives.

      Go to step 3

  2. Step 2: Give your VIN to the dealer and ask whether a service bulletin or warranty extension covers this code on your car.

    Low risk

    • IfA bulletin or extension applies

It meansThe dealer repairs it under the bulletin.

      Go to step 3

    • IfNothing applies

It meansThe circuit still needs a diagnosis.

      Go to step 3

  3. Step 3: Leave the diagnosis to a dealer or trained technician, who measures the circuit with the service manual procedure.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool with airbag access, manufacturer procedure

Warning:Airbag wiring can set off an airbag if it is probed, disconnected or powered the wrong way, and that can cause serious injury. Do not test or unplug airbag connectors yourself.

Symptoms

  • Airbag (SRS) warning light stays on after the engine starts
