Power transfer unit (PTU) codes

On all-wheel-drive vehicles built from a front-wheel-drive design, the power transfer unit is a gearbox bolted to the transmission that sends power back to the rear wheels when needed. On the Jeep Cherokee and the Chrysler Pacifica and Voyager AWD, a small electric motor called a smart actuator engages and disengages it.

How its codes differ

  • C14A7 with subcode 97 is an FCA chassis code meaning the PTU motor or its mechanism is obstructed or blocked. FCA notices say updated diagnostics may show the smart actuator, not the whole PTU, is the right repair.
  • On some 2017–2019 Cherokees, C14A7-97 can show after Recall 01C when the drive cycle cannot be completed, which is not a failed part.
  • Noise, vibration and a Service 4WD message without that code can point to an internal PTU failure; 2019–2023 Cherokees are covered by a recall for internal PTU failure that can cause loss of drive or let the vehicle roll in Park.

Codes

  • C14A7

All-wheel-drive power transfer unit actuator blocked or not moving (FCA)

    Severity: Severity not verified

Signs it's failing

  • Service 4WD or Service AWD message
  • Noise or vibration while driving
  • Loss of drive, or the vehicle moving when in Park, on some recalled Cherokees

How to test it

  1. Have the codes read with a scan tool that reads FCA chassis and drivetrain modules, and write down the subcode and any other codes. (Low risk)

  2. Give the VIN to a dealer to check for open recalls and PTU service bulletins before agreeing to replace the whole unit. (Low risk)

  3. Running the PTU diagnostics, checking the actuator and inspecting the unit are jobs for a shop. (Best left to a shop)

Warning: The work needs the maker's current diagnostics and raising the vehicle. Never work under a vehicle held up only by a jack, and the exhaust next to the PTU gets hot enough to cause serious burns.

After the repair

  • Confirm any recall or drive-cycle procedure named in the bulletin was completed.
  • Confirm the warning message has cleared and no chassis codes return after a normal drive.
