P1778 on Nissan
Manufacturer-specific code. On Nissan CVTs: step motor function, the actual pulley ratio not following the step motor command
Severity: Inspect soon
Nissan pairs this code with slower than normal acceleration from a stop, and its owner's manual says the CVT fail-safe mode can light the check engine light.
It gets more serious if:
- Not verified: The transmission goes into limp-home or default mode (stuck in one gear, little power) or will not shift. Regulations require the light in limp-home mode, but we found no source saying whether you must stop
